Why doesnt Matt Serra go down to LW?

I don't know that he'd be champ for sure..but he'd DEFINITELY be a constant contender I think.

The primary reason he's not down at 155 according to him...is simply because he doesn't want to make the weight cut. He's a little older...he's got more mature "man muscle" etc...and it's more difficult. Now...with his frame he COULD do it...in fact...if he's willing to put forth the effort and have DISCIPLINE he could do it fairly easily all things considered. But he just doesn't have the will to do it.

Cheers sir!

That's a damn shame. I really think he'd be a beast at 155.

i really dont know if he could make it i mean sure he might be able to but do you see how big he is, strength wise he's probably the strongest welterweight i mean he's jacked, it'd be hard to cut the muscle he'd have to along with the regular weight!

No way he's the strongest ww. Rumble GSP and Alves to name a few are all stronger.

I think he would be a major contender @ LW. He has power in his striking and his ground game is excellent. I think he could be LW champ. Anyone else feel this way?

I have definitely thought the same, however, Serra knows better than us how he responds to cutting weight, and there are many examples of fighters for whom its just not worth it. Some guys can just perform better and feel stronger at a weight class where they are possibly a bit undersized. Look at Diego Sanchez, Mike Swick, Rich Franklin, and more recently, at least according to Dana, Thiago Alves.

i think it is better if he moves down' date='it would be a great match gomi/kenflo vs serra.[/quote']

him and Gomi would be an entertaining slugfest I think, but I'm pretty sure that Kenny would maim him. I happen to believe though, that Kenny is the best lightweight in the world and will prove this over the next few fights.

Pasta

Bingo!

Also, when you get down to it, I honestly think he only fights to make some extra cash now and again. If you look back the guy has fought once a year since 2005. With his upcoming fight against Lytle in Sept this is the first year with 2 fights in a year since 2004 and only the 3rd time he has fought more than one fight a year since 2001.

I really don't think he is motivated enough to really cut to 155lb to chase a title shot. He seems to be much more involved in his school and teaching at this point in his life. At 36, why starve yourself to make 155lb when he can eat his pasta, run his school and fight at 170lb once or so a year to keep his name out there and make some extra cash.
