Penn/Hughes or Machida/Rampage

So, two of the most decorated former champions in UFC history (Penn/Hughes) are in the co-main event and Rampage/Machida of course is the main event. Does anyone else see what I see?

I would think a rubber match between Hughes and Penn sounds more exciting and this should be a historic matchup. Rampage vs Machida, on the other hand....I keep hearing Machida will win by decision or Rampage will KO Machida. Personally, I think it will be the former, not the latter. Is it because Rampage is a movie star now? I know he's a big name, but so are the others. I guess it doesn't bother me much, but I was just wondering your opinions on this.

What are you guys more excited about and why?

Hughes Vs. Penn would have been the ME if I were to book the card.

CLEARLY the more interesting fight.

I think it had to do with the timing. I'm pretty sure that Machida/Rampage was made before they decided to do the rubber match, and Machida and Rampage had already been promised the main event slot. They couldn't really just take the main event away from them, and I assume Penn and Hughes were just willing to fight regardless of whether it was main event or co-main event.

I am personally more interested in Penn/ Hughes but I understand it not being the main event. I think the Rampage/ Machida fight is more relevant to the title picture in that weight class. I could see either guy getting the next crack at the belt depending on who wins between Shogun and Rashad. If Machida and Rashad both won or if Shogun and Rampage both won would make interesting title fights. Penn and Hughes I think will be a better fight but I don't think it currently has a significant effect on anything in the WW division.

yes this. Machida and Rampage have just fought the two guys who are going to fight for the belt. Whoever wins will be a serious contender for the belt again.

BJ is skipping from LW to WW so theres no real title run and Matt is just fighting whoever they give him and isn't making a title run either. It's less relevant to the title picture.

Having said that I'm hugely looking forward to both fights and I don't care how they branded it.

I gotta go with Penn/Hughes... the main reason being that I am a Penn ****, but other reasons include - rubber match between two of the biggest names in the sport, they cant stand each other (though they have toned it down), a lot of history between them, BJ on a down trend and hughes is on a 3 fight win streak where he has taken out 3 bjj fighters, so it is upto BJ to defend bjj against a wrestler.

This is a sick card. All the main cards are champions.

However you have to go with Penn/Matt becuase those guys have defended their belts and are legends for their merits.

Lyoto and Rampage were champs without a defense and we dont know what they will come in as.

They both defended their belt lawl...

yeah i think rumours of machida/rampage where already everywhere on the internet wayyy before hughes/penn 3 was brought up.

i remember waking up one morning and BOOM hughes/penn 3 was announced almost out of thin air...nevertheless, both fights make this card goooood!

I see you're point, but as classic (and more intriging) as Hughes vs. Penn is, it's not releveant in the WW title picture. It's similar to Tito vs. Lil Nog.

Rampage vs. Machida the winner is still very relevant in the LHW division, and title picture.

Yes, I'm more excited about the rubber match, but understand why it's the co-main event.

Even though DW hasn't confirmed it, I think Machida vs Rampage is a #1 contender fight, whereas Penn vs Hughes 3, isn't. But I agree, I'm more excited for PvH3 and it should have been the ME.

They both defended their belt lawl...

You are correct.

I have it im my mind that thye didnt. I know they did but i felt so poorly about Machida's defense against a superior Shogun that it just isnt an acceptable defense for me.Regardless what the officials say, Shogun won the first fight.

Rampage is the same thing. He did some things vs Hendo that i didnt find, dominant. Hendo had more strikes landed than Rampage. Its all opinion but as i said, You are correct.

I agree the main event has potential to be a snooze fest but the relevance of this fight makes it far more exciting for me. That and Jackson has always brung excitement out of me when he fights albeit he's had some bad performances. Penn and Hughes is more of a hollywood stunt in my eyes although there is a little to gain for Hughes in a victory and nearly nothing for Penn in victory given I don't see him doing well in today's 170lb division.

How can his fight possibly be a snooze fest? Rampage will be trying to knock him out and I doubt if Machida will be looking for the take down, I think it'll be a good stand up fight.

Machida took Shogun down like twice in less than 3 minutes. However unlike Shogun, Rampage will not be getting up.
