Fatality911
If so I have a quick question. If you do a complete rewrite of fairy tales, but use the original fairy tales for just small plot points are you infringing on the original authors work? PRIDEneverDIED
example??? its a really tricky thing to judge, i am learning about this now in school and they use an abstraction scale to see how close to the original it is and so forth

Who's too say that the reason Rapunzel is in the tower isn't because she is a sociopath who was found guilty of killing and eating her husband, and now she lures men to the tower to climb up so she can do the same to them. Since im not going to be using a single sentence from the original authors work. Plagiarism isn't a problem. However, since I would be using the original authors character and a few small plot points, copyright infringment could be a problem. Does that make sense at all? Epilogue1406051983
there is a good chance some of the fairy tales might be public domain, so if you were re-writing those that are public domain you might be okay... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain I think it also depends on the laws in your country, but hopefully the link above and some extra research can get you set... there are many things that are re-hashed versions of public domain material... PRIDEneverDIED
yea it makes perfect sense the main thing i have learned is make it different or tricky enough that whoever owns the copyright wont want to waste money and time taking a shot in the dark on a case they might lose ha
PRIDEneverDIED
also another thing is are you planning on making an financial gain with this idea

Traditional culture and folklore tends to be trans-generational, old and collectively "owned" by groups or communities. Often traditional culture and folklore is of anonymous origin and expressions of this pre-existing traditional culture is generally not protected by current intellectual property laws and is treated as being in the public domain. This paragraph makes it sound like I would be o.k because fairy tales fall under folklore from what I understand. Like old ghost stories passed down from generation to generation etc. The ghost is always the same, but the story of how she became a ghost always changes. Fatality911
also another thing is are you planning on making an financial gain with this idea Yeah. If I take the time to rewrite 12-14 different fairy tales then I would definitely be pursuing publication.
