Please discuss

EDIT* I find this to be lame if they lock up the title even longer. If they give Edgar a different fight I will be good with that. I don't enjoy watching Edgar, but I enjoy it even less when he is fighting Maynard

Why not do an interm title..... I mean with SO many 155ers an Interm LW title would seem appropriate?

Did you read the article? Frankie Edgar has been cleared to fight. Why would you do an interim belt when the champ is ready to go? Its Maynard who still hasn't been cleared. If Gray doesn't get clearance soon, just drop him from the fight and give Frankie a new challenger.

nope.

But my point is to have an interm title match in the meantime, then have that fighter face the winner of the Maynard Edgar 3 as a hyped up "unification" bout.

guess you didnt read the post you quoted either, and Interm fight is for when the Champ is unable to defend... the Champ (edgar) is cleared to fight the Challenger (Maynard) is not.... no need for interm title when the champ is ready to go, they can have a real title fight........

well, would the UFC take Maynard's shot away. But your right about the Interm title circumstances not being met. It would be some special condition stuff going on i suppose

And plus its kind of weird now because wern't they going to unify the titles between Pettis and winner of edgar/maynard? now that Pettis lost does it mean he aint WEC champ anymore?

I see no reason why the UFC would not take Gray's shot away if he's unable to fight. They've done it before. After GSP beat Penn for the first time he was supposed to face Hughes for the belt. GSP was injured in training and the UFC went with Penn instead. Machida's first defense was supposed to be against Rampage, but Rampage pulled out with a jaw injury and then decided to do TUF against Rashad first, so they went with Shogun.

Ok... Put BJ Penn Vs Melvin Guillard for the interim lightweight title and then u got ur problem solved right ??

clearly this is not an actual option. first, gray might be ready by october, seems like it's still up in the air to me. so he may still be able to fight, who knows. second, an interim fight? sigh. third, why bj OR guillard when jim miller is out there waiting. if gray can't fight it should, without a doubt, be miller's turn.

Dude, with close to 5,000 posts please tell me you were joking when you made these statements and it's all part of your campaign to get to 5,000 posts. You have got to have more MMA knowledge than what you've displayed in this thread....either that or you've been posting like crazy since you were born yesterday.

Here's the problems...let's assume they pencil in Edgar vs. (challenger) for a late October date.

Miller is apparently the guy behind Maynard in contention. Thing is, first he has to get past Bendo on August 14th. That's a month and a half before a possible matchup with Edgar. He might get injured in his fight and even if he isn't will he take the short notice shot? Probably, but if Miller looks bad fighting Edgar it'll leave fans a bit unhappy about it. Easy way to avoid this is if they can do November for that little bit of extra time. Problem is if Maynard is able to come back by then....

Meanwhile...after Maynard and Miller the next names right now are basically Guida and Guillard. Now the rub here is that setting them up in a match would be a great idea.....but....they both train at Jackson's where notoriously fighters will not fight each other. Each have been on a streak and you can make a case for both deserving a title shot, so really it seems your best option is to put one of these guys forward for an October date with Edgar.

They wouldn't schedule the Bendo fight with Miller, they would just cancel it and assign Bendo a different fighter (Guida?) They won't keep putting off the championship fight as long as the champion is healthy, it just becomes an unfortunate circumstance for Maynard and Miller gets his shot.

That is another possibility, and most likely if they take Miller out to face Edgar ASAP Guida is the most logical to swap in, since Guillard JUST fought.

I'd be all for it because I think we'd finally see someone fighting Edgar who could take him out of his shadowboxing form and beat him.

And Guida beating Bendo would only add to his stock to give him his title shot.
