without having that great of a skill set, has there been or is it possible for a fighter to become champion or one of the best through lucky breaks? such as landing a big punch or winning a controversial decision, and working there way up the division when it could of easily been alot different on a different day. the media can hype any fighter to make him seem better than he actually is.

His name is Matt Serra. He became the champ by winning TUF and then clipping GSP.

Also, Roger Huerta comes to mind. He was handed multiple easy fights, and some ranked him in the top five, but other than one (rather lucky knee) win of Guida, he had exactly 0 wins over any lightweight in the top 25.

He won one fight vs a mentally unstable Leben and then the title fight. If that is not a lucky break than what is?

Obviously that didn't matter. :D

Patrick Cote wasn't champion... but he lucked his way to a title shot

I forgot all about him. So overrated.

Royce Gracie.

Now wait a second, let me explain.

At UFC1 there was only one drawback from crackin' a dude's nuts, a small fine. ($1,000 I believe) Period. No matter how many times in a fight or how many fights. The winner's purse would make paying that fine a laugh. While Royce undoubtedly is one of the major pioneers of MMA, he's damn lucky nobody decided to play dirty to win.

Lesnar and Serra and choices that were already said and I agree with.

Dan Hardy IMO had a very easy ride to a title shot. Even tho he lost he should have never gotten that shot to begin with.

Shogun, even thought he kinda deserved it based on skill and accomplishments didn't really deserved it. He kinda got an easy ride with Coleman and Chuck.

Randy Couture for the Sylvia fight. 13 months inactive and coming back from a loss should never get you a title shot. Doesn't matter if he won or if he's Randy, he should have never gotten that chance.

Anderson Silva after he beat Chris Leben. One win over Leben without being a major organization champion just doesn't cut it, he gets some slack because the fans voted him to get the next shot tho.

Can't remember others of the top of my head.

P.S. Even if the guy won, doesn't mean he deserved to get that chance in the first place.

G-Sot.

Beats Stevenson an it seems like a good win but now look at Joe Daddy. Then beats Pelligrino, same story as Stevenson. Then fights Siver and look what happened and then the dos Anjos KO.

His only good win was Lauzon and he was getting beat 'til J-Lau faded.

Jon Jones' date=' he didn't fight any top fighters and was awarded a title shot because the real #1 contender had to pull out.[/quote']

I think your choice is invalid, Jon Jones may have got the title shot because Rashad Evans pulled out.

Jon Jones dominating performance over Shogun showed that it was no lucky break.

Definteley Dan Hardy..Guy beats Rory Markham' date=' Split decision win against Marcus Davis then beats Swick for a title shot? Thats just funny now that i think about it.[/quote']

My thought exactly. He has to be least qualified guy win and skillwise to get a shot at the title.

7 wins in a row doesnt come from a lucky break...
