cagescrapper
MMA is a baby when it comes to other mainstream sports. When compared to other sports like Hockey, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, and Football, MMA is still an infant. Current MMA fans are doing a great job of supporting the sport, and helping more people to understand it. But there are some major issues that are holding the sport back; things like Performance enhancing drugs, Inconsistent and poor judging, and MANY more issues. What do you think is the biggest issue when it comes to holding the sport of MMA back? Comment below or vote HERE

Doctor_Obviously
Judging by far. Then rules should be the same in all MMA organizations. Draws. BillBurgess
I agree that steroids are probably a problem, but one that is not the one most holding back MMA. After all, the other major American sports also have this problem and are prospering. MMA is fast-growing but I think it could grow MUCH, MUCH faster if the mainstream sports fan had access to it on network TV for free for a few killer events. The one factor that could push the UFC and make it much, much bigger would be to force Top 10 fighters to fight other Top 10 fighters on a MUCH more consistent basis. How could Matt Hughes go all these years without ever facing once, Fitch or Koscheck. He is only now getting Sanchez, who has been around a long time. In event after event, for YEARS, whenever there is a Top 10 fighter on the card, it is very rare if he is fighting another Top 10 fighter. The Top 10 guys are almost always fed a steady stream of guys who are either Top 11-20 or even lower. Not exclusively, but consistently. That is my #1 gripe with the UFC. That is why I have lobbied so hard for Official Rankings. To solve this long-standing and chronic problem. But sadly, most fellow members disagree with me and defend the match-making by saying: 1. It's a business. 2. If it ain't broke 3. Just show exciting fights None of which is satisfactory. Solve this one problem, and the sports will continue to explode with even more velocity. Fail to solve it, and continue to rationalize, and they are holding the sport back from its natural, maximum growth rate. The reason MMA has been able to grow fast like it has is that boxing fell due to corrupt promoters, and wrestling is fake. We're filling a vacuum left by boxing's fall. BOILEDFREAKEGGS
The biggest thing hurting MMA right now is lack of smaller organizations to provide talent. I look at how many former UFC fighters are out there and it would be nice to see most of them in a smaller organization such as Bellator or an upstart. Think Kendall Grove, Gerald Harris, Escodero, Nover, etc.... Also, Strikeforce needs to be totally redesigned. I always harp on the announcers, but it's true. They are absolute CRAP. Not to mention, the fighters in Strikeforce are also below par. Please Dana wipe out and restart!~

Overtime rounds would be nice. Dip**** fans who don't know what respect is.. exactly Not only do they need to use same rules but same environment, Japan needs to change their ring to a cage and same sized cages. I would rather have an additional round instead of a judge, because atm it is easier to add a 4th round to 3round fights than to educate judges. Epilogue1406051983
the biggest thing holding MMA back is the lack of consistency... there is poor judging because there is no truly solid, consistent criteria to follow, which leaves a lot of deciding process very arbitrary and there is no true ranking system, which leaves some fighters fighting for their lives a ridiculous amount of times with no advancement or title shots in sight (Miller, Fitch, Hendricks, etc.) but will give very undeserving fighters jump starts because of their marketability or celebrity (Diaz, Lesnar, etc.)... these problems and lack of consistency allows for MMA to be more juxtaposed to "sports entertainment" like WWE rather than true sports... this is largely because, as the OP said, MMA is very new as a sport and is still trying to plant it's feet... hopefully with time these issues will be sorted out as the sport grows and can extend itself beyond pure business and marketing... but as of right now, I don't expect very many changes, especially with the UFC trying to monopolize the sport...
